Hamburger helper is a simple and tasty way to spice up everyday ground beef. As many of you may know, the original which came from General Mills, comes in a variety of flavors ranging from the classic to chili. It’s taste is unique in many ways. You can, with the help of a few spices, make this at home. I love doing this as you can duplicate the original taste and add you own twist. Actually, I find mine far more tasty than the hamburger helper you buy in boxes. When I make the recipe, I usually double or triple the ingredients and place them in a zip lock bag along with the noodles. If I do this, I can just grab a bag out of the cupboard when I’m strapped for time and have a quick dinner ready in a few minutes.
I try to use a fairly lean ground beef when making my hamburger helper. Even if I use lean beef, I usually drain off the fat 3/4 of the way through the browning. I love Worcestershire sauce and add it to just about every ground beef dish I make. You, of course, can leave it out if you wish. I have added powdered garlic and onions simply for convenience, but you can add in fresh onion and garlic if you wish. Put them in just after you have drained the excess grease from the pan (about 3/4 of the way thought the browning) and allow them to saute with the meat until the onions are translucent. The rest of the ingredients are negotiable. If you want to add a little more of some and a little less of others, buy all means do so. The art of cooking always involves experimentation.

- 1 cup of water
- 2 cups of milk
- 1 3/4 cups of elbow macaroni
- 1 tbsp of corn startch
- 1 tbsp of chili powder
- 1/2 tsp of onion powder
- 1 tbsp of sugar
- 1 tsp of garlic powder
- 3/4 tsp of salt
- 3/4 tsp of paprika
- 1 tsp of pepper
- 1 cup of cheddar cheese, grated
- 2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce

- In a zip lock bag, combine the corn starch, chili powder, onion powder, sugar, garlic powder, salt, paprika, and pepper. Seal the bag and shake the ingredients until they are well combined. You can make up a few of these bags and put them in the cupboard for quick use in the future.
- Add a bit of oil to a preheated pan. Place the ground beef in and fry it over medium high heat until it is lightly browned.
- Add in the milk and water. Bring it to a boil. Add in the Worcestershire sauce and the spices. Allow it to simmer over low heat, stirring occasionally, for about 20 to 25 minutes until most of the liquids have boiled off.
- Turn off the heat and stir in the cheddar cheese.
- Serve and enjoy your hamburger helper.
